PARTS OF SPEECH

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. To know and understand the role with grammar and syntax play in communicating
ideas clearly and accurately.

2. To show awareness of the importance of learning how to apply the rules of grammar and syntax.

3. To construct correct sentences in oral communication as well as in written discourse.

Man communicates with others through the use of language. Words
which are produced through the articulation of sounds are the basic
tools of language.

There are different kinds of words which are classified according to their meanings and functions in the sentence. In modern grammar these parts of speech are divided into into two groups, the CONTENT WORDS or FORM CLASSES which include NOUNS, VERBS, ADJECTIVES, and ADVERBS. while the other group is called FUNCTION WORDS or STRUCTURE WORDS which is made up of PRONOUNS, DETERMINERS, INTENSIFIERS, AUXILIARY VERBS, PREPOSITIONS and CONJUNCTIONS.

The differences in form and function distinguish one part of speech from another. However, there does not exist any clear classification of words because a word  in isolation ordinary classified as one part
of speech can in function turn out to be  another part of speech can in function turn out to be another part of speech. This is due to the flexibility of the English language.

EXAMPLE:

1. He has spoken before the enthusiastic group.
Spoken is used here as the past participle of VERB.

2. The spoken word was made  before the enthusiastic group.
Spoken is used here as an ADJECTIVE.
